I had high hopes for this DLC which is rare because I usually tend to have low expectations for most everything so I don't end up too dissapointed when it inevitably sucks, so I was thrilled that not only did I actually enjoy this DLC but it was even better than I had imagined it could be.

Highlights from the main mission for me were getting the actual apartment from Anderson, it's friggin huge and later in the DLC you find out just why it needed to be so big, I literally spent around a half hour walking around the apartment checking it out along with Anderson's audio logs.  Another great feature was how they factored your decisions into the way the characters appeared and interacted with you.  For instance your love interest shows up by themselves at one point to assist you (I had Kaidan of course and he got a really sweet cutscene where we finally got to see him using his biotics, it was pretty badass).  There was also a moment where I was choosing squaddies and the ones I didn't pick complained about never being brought along (for me it was Tali though I don't know if that's entirely accurate since I thought I used her more than James)  still it apparently picks the one you used the least in the game to make that funny comment.

As for the big twist in the main story (Shepard having an evil clone and Brooks turning out to be an enemy) a lot of people are kind of upset because it's sort of a sci-fi trope, and while that's true I really didn't mind at all.  I actually had sort of a funny personal reaction to the whole thing because there's a part where the clone turned to Kaidan and said something to the effect of "I would have picked the other one on Virmire, Ashley something."  Now as someone who plays a gay Shepard I sometimes get hate mail from people who tell me I'm playing the game wrong and they say this exact kind of thing so I was sort of viewing the clone as basically a representation of all these assholes who assert that their Shepard's are somehow more legitimate than my own.  It was just something that gave me a lot of laughs while playing because it felt like an opportunity to finally shut down the haters.  As for Brooks turning on us I was actually really dissapointed because I had started to like her character a lot.  She was really endearing with how rookie-ish she was about everything and to find out it was all an act was a let down but at the same time it just made her seem like an even more worthy villain.  By the end of the boss fight with clone Shepard you realize it's really her who's pulling all the strings and orchestrating the entire plot against you.  Clone Shepard is just an unfortunate pawn.  So when you're forced to make a final decision to either save or kill clone Shepard (he dies either way) I had relented and actually felt bad for the guy.  Seeing him die was surprisingly sad.

Other highlights included getting to have Wrex back as a playable character.  He charges right into battle melee-ing opponents unlike most squaddies so it was great watching him in action.  I also loved getting to bring whoever you want along for the casino portion of the mission,  seeing your squaddies/LI dress up all fancy was pretty awesome and I'd always wanted them to include a mission where it would just be you and your LI together.  There are also character appearances from past games in that section (Shaiira the consort among them).  Hands down the best moment of this mission though was when Traynor's toothbrush saved the Normandy, I haven't laughed that hard in a really long time. Unfortunately the actual mission is not terribly long so I'd reccomend playing on a higher difficulty and really taking your time the first play through to get the most enjoyment out of the experience.

Now what comes after the main mission kinda took me kinda by surprise,  you are given the opportunity to actually explore a new area of the citadel wards and plan to throw a party for all of your squadmates in your new pad.  Now some people may think this is lame because it doesn't fit into the serious context of the rest of the game and that is a totally valid reason.  After all millions of people are out there dying while you're having fun but the reason I didn't really mind so much is because they tell you the Normandy is drydocked for repairs,  now if Shepard and crew happen to be on the citadel while this is going on there's really not much you can do about the war at that particular time.  Plus you have to consider that they've now been fighting reapers for months and this one night is kind of their last chance to spend quality time together before going off to possibly die on the final assault so it makes sense to me that they'd want to enjoy it.

While out gathering party supplies you can interact with all of the characters from ME3 and past games.  Some are found randomly on the strip and others have to be invited individually to your apartment via a console.  The scenes are all hilarious and touching and each one really serves as a way to say one final goodbye to a particular character.    There are also fun mini games to play in the arcade and casino area as well as a fully decked out combat arena with side missions for you to complete.  A real highlight of that arena is that you can use your squad mates from ME2.  I've already spent a few hours in there trying out different builds and character combos.  Been using Kaidan and Miranda mostly since having two sentinels along with my own biotics is insane (though it is still quite challenging against super elite enemies).

The party itself for me was the real highlight of this DLC , it basically plays out in three stages and you can make a choice at each stage to liven things up or keep it quiet, that along with the option to invite particular squad mates to the event results in a huge level of re playability.  I've already played it around five times and each time had new dialogue/ scenes.  The comedy here is definitely the best in the entire series too, some of the funniest moments I thought were Grunt and Tali's individual scenes where they got wasted and passed out in bathrooms around the apartment.  Kasumi also kept cloaking in and out of cover at hilarious moments.  There is also a part where Jack and Miranda sit down at a bar and talk things out, it was some of the funniest dialogue I've ever heard.  My one complaint about this party and actually in general is that they give you this big ass hottub in your apartment and nobody ever uses it! (well except for traynor during her individual meeting but it's not really a big deal).  It would have been great to see them end up in there at some point or at least be able to invite your LI into it, kinda like how you could invite someone up to your cabin in ME2.  Once the party is over your big ass apartment feels really empty and this feature would have been great.  Plus Kaidan's romance scene was a little too tame and short for my liking.

Lastly, the scene after the party with Shepard and crew looking out at the Normandy was for me the most moving scene in the entire trilogy as it was the final shot of everything we love about these games and having Kaidan offer a final note of encouragement to Shepard was just what I needed to see in order to feel like I can move on to another Mass Effect title in the future.  I'm still upset that the actual ending to my game ends with Shepard in a pile of rubble without a rescue scene intact but the dialogue between Kaidan and Shepard at the end just reinforced the idea that they would find each other when it was all over so I was happy about that,  Jack's romance scene actually had a bit that specifically mentions the pile of rubble (foreshadowing) and how she would actually pull him out of that pile. I feel like Bioware sees synthesis as the best ending but putting this kind of dialogue into the DLC  seems like a compromise with those of us who prefer destroy and needed more hope that Shepard lives on in that ending.

So all in all I'm really sad that it's over, this game has been a big part of my life this past year but at least I'm sad because of the fact that this DLC reminded me just how amazing these characters were and how much I'm going to miss them rather than being sad over the ending not feeling like a fitting conclusion to the story (which was the case for me a year ago).  The citadel DLC practically feels like an epilogue more than a mid-game mission but this doesn't really bother me as much since that's exactly what I wanted, this DLC may not be everyone's cup of tea but if you're a fan of these characters and have been with them since the beginning you will not regret this purchase.

There is however one major issue with the game still at this point that really needs to be fixed, the last patch to the game introduced major glitches during key scenes that revolve around your Love interest, so far I've heard of it affecting scenes with Liara, Kaidan, Ashley, Garrus, and Steve and they are happening on all console sytems it would seem.  Horrible animation issues like heads spinning around 180 degrees at the party photo op as well as previously working scenes now glitched to high hell with eyes rolling back and forth and dialogue not matching mouth movements.  For me this has rendered the pre-illusive man's base romance scene completely unwatchable.  The issue is that Bioware has said there will be no additional patches to the game from here on out, this is not ok as we all payed for a product and having our most cherished content left in a broken state because Bioware failed to adequately playtest is not ok.  If you have a moment please leave a comment on this thread on the BSN advocating one final patch to fix these recent glitches.  The more attention we can bring to this issue the better.  I would greatly appreciate it as I"m sure we all want to be able to replay these games in the future and not have the immersion completely ruined.  I posted some pics there so you can see just how horrible these glitches really are.

This DLC was definitely my favorite of the series. Kaidan coming to the rescue and the interplay between them w/ the volus got me all flustered (=w=) I also do wish there was a least one more interaction with Kaidan while on the strip though. Taylor, James, Jack and Cortez get two each and I only see Kaidan once when he attempts to make dinner?, not fair. (that CS should have totally ended and reloaded with you in the bedroom and not at the bottom of that staircase btw!)

To solve that empty nest feeling in that huge place I think we should have had the option to have our LI and two other people stay in the apartment with us after the missions were over. There are 3 bedrooms after all. (For me it would have been Shep+Kaidan of course, James downstairs w/ the punching bag,... and probably Cortez upstairs above him so James has his buddy nearby. James sharing an apt w/ three gay dudes sounds about right and would make for some interesting fan fiction too heh) Your roommates should have been found randomly around the apartment whenever there wasn't someone coming up for an invite CS. A bit of a side note but I would have loved to have found Kaidan asleep in our cabin on the ship after a non-mission trip to the citadel instead of always on the observatory. Even if you couldn't interact with him.. just him being there would have given me so much joy. The cabin and the apartment was ours, not mine.

Scene at the Normandy Docks... Perfect.
Timeline-wise this DLC makes the most sense to me if it takes place right after completing the Quarian-Geth Conflict but before you talk to the Asari Counselor about going to the temple on Thessia. (Which just so happened to be when I DLed it during my recent Insanity playthrough for the achievement.) All the major conflicts are taken care of, there are no more leads, and your ship did just spend the last few missions in an active battle zone so it probably got a few dings in it even with the stealth drive active. At that point in the game the only character missing is Miranda since she's not available until after Horizon. I did later skip over the party and do it again after Horizon to see her scenes but honestly, after the loss at Thessia and the atrocities at Horizon, .. to put my search for the Prothean VI and my revenge on the Illusive Man after I found out where his base is..all on hold... to take shore leave for repairs??, it just doesn't make sense. She should have been available beforehand. Her appearing on the Citadel could have easily been explained away because she was waiting for some intel on her sister's location to come back to her or something.

About the Clone, to be honest, I did feel let down when I first saw him come out. I thought it was pretty thoughtless and cliche. It wasn't until later when I realized, oh.. I'm going to have to fight me..err..him, that I started to change my mind. The idea of pitting my own abilities against myself, Sentinel vs Sentinel, did get me all excited. I was totally fine with it and it made more sense than just them running out of ideas after that. Getting to fight the rest of the Sheps in the mirror battle at the Armex Arena was killer. Probably the hardest fight in the game until I got my strategy down. Maybe cuz I was still under the Insanity Mode setting? idk but Kaidan, James, and I kicked their asses.

Sadly I also have the same glitch problems as you. People randomly trying to look behind them or off to the right during conversations throughout the game, I thought it was just me. During the pic with everyone at the party, most people were looking off to the left on my second play through of it. And alas, my pre-Illusive Man base sex scene is also super eye rolling before the dream, and afterwards the lip animation and voice acting aren't in synch. I have save points at every major Kaidan/Shep moment but this one I only got to see normally on my first play through. Seeing the Default Shep go through it on YouTube is just not the same. : /

. . . ok last thing I promise heh. FemShep getting to hook up w/ James probably answered a lot of prayers but after seeing it on YouTube, getting a gay version of that would be sooo easy. All those Bi-curious innuendos throughout the game, the face he makes and stuttering moment when you're coming on to him when he comes up to show you his tattoo, James saying "I'd take quite a few drinks and one of those one in a lifetime nights" at the party when you try again, him dancing like a female npc, the awkward morning after's "Maybe let's not mention this again.".. it practically writes itself! lol. James needs to just try it once, you know, just to get it out of his system.

Scene at the Normandy Docks... Perfect.

So. i just want to agree with pretty much everything you said. I was also so very impressed with this DLC, and it made me so happy and so sad to play through it... so much so that i actually went back and restarted the trilogy. My faith in the game has been reinstated... and my love for these characters remembered.
I also adored the clone storyline. it was well done, and ridiculously fun. and just silly enough that it didn't overshadow anything else.

great review. and beautiful gallery.

I played this last dlc with great pleasure, sure there were some memorable moments, nostalgic, others a little less, but to be able to please everyone is really an impossible task. I personally would have accentuated even more the relationship with their partner (obviously Kaidan) in the new apartment. There was so much a hot tub to use that inspired filth, but ... however, until else is imagination. I really enjoyed the humor of some dialogues, which have made it more human and credible these characters. Maybe that's why it made me so sad to know that I will have to say goodbye to characters so charismatic. Also I find that this dlc is another alternate ending rather than a mission license. ahhh. with regard to the issue of exorcism for some characters in my version for pc I have not found. But since I also have the ps3 version I'm seriously worried. if I were to happen I'll let you know. I conclude by saying that this game has given me so many emotions. and will always be high on my list of the best. Thanks Bioware, and thanks to all you guys for the company and the works of art inspired by this story and characters. I do not feel quite ready to say goodbye to these characters ... I want to draw more. soon.:D

Only glitch I noticed (other than dialogue not matching up with the mouth movements) was that Shepard's omni-blade never activated when he impales that soldier in the sushi restaurant like it did in the trailer. Aw man!

Nice entry, I felt almost exactly the same way you did about everything. I was the laziest butt that weekend... it was so good. But I definitely and totally viewed this DLC as taking place *after* the war.

..I will miss these characters, feel like I have said goodbye to a host of friends. Again. :(

Take Care!

oh man I hope i dont get an of the glitches that would ruin the whole game for me. @ .@

But man Wrex as a playable character IS THE BEST THING EVER his dialogue with Garrus around is just so funny. And Traynor's toothbrush saving the day had nothing on Shepard's dialogue with the space hamster. Funniest DLC ever though, and it was fantastic, ehehehe.

I loved the new dlc, but I did notice several glitches.
Here are two examples:
1. During the final fight against the clone, he fell out of the ship and I wasn't able to finish the fight without reloading it from the beginning.
2. During that final moment before leaving the Citadel and continuing the adventure, the music glitched and played two soundtracks at once and I was unable to hear the dialogue, which sucked cause it was amazing.

The complaining characters are the ones I never pick? No more multiplayer dlc? :iconcryforever: That's weird since Kaiden and Garrus are my two favorite squaddies. I assume you played the dlc earlier than I did because I never saw Miranda at the party or combat sim. BTW what class are you? And what did you think of the multiplayer character dialogue?

I am still sobbing a bit inside with that DLC.. it was so good, but at the same time it was a farewell and that makes me so very, very sad. How can I say goodbye to all these awesome characters? It's impossible!

And I'm 100% with you on the thing about the hottub... why can only Traynor have it? D: I squeed from the second I saw it, imagining bringing Kaidan home with me and slurping wine with him in there. But nope. :( I can just look at the bubbles, all sad. And yeah, the love-scene was nice, but I wouldn't have minded a little spice for after the couch-moment :D

And I'm not sure about the glitches, I just noticed that sometimes scenes get "stuck" for like a second on a faintly black picture of before the camera turns, which makes it a bit weird, but a tleast not unwatchable - yet.

Are you sure they said no more patches? I know they aren't releasing any more single-player DLC but surely the multiplayer could receive more free DLC, offering the chance for a bug-fixing patch?

This DLC was well worth the $15. Could probably play through it three dozen times and not see all the possible scenes or hear all the dialogue for it.

I loved this DLC! And I didn't mind the evil clone trope, it was awesomely silly and since the entire tone of this DLC seemed to be the creator's last farewell to fans for this game and having fun with it, it didn't clash at all. I giggled through most of it, and I'm looking forward to playing with other Shepards to see the difference.

Though, Thane's memorial really got to me. *sniffle*

I agree on most things. This is the only ME3 DLC I bought, because Leviathan is just a (imo failed) try to explain the ending (Again), and Omega doesn't even have the courtesy to give you a new hub OR make Aria actually stay there.

Also I have to admit that the DLC feels like and is best viewed as an after-end content. Make up a headcanon for what exactly happened and how Shepard survived, and it solves most of the issues I would have.
Yes, some of the dialouges don't work well with that, but maybe there are a few remaining Reaper or Cerberus forces still out there, like the mentioned Geth at the beginning of ME2. The details are up to you.

I am sorry to hear about the animation glitch; I play on PC so haven't been afflicted by it, but it sounds awful; hopefully Bioware will find some way to patch it.

Sigh, it would have meant more for me (personally) if my Shepard hadn't died horribly alone and miserable within the initial walkthrough of ME for me. He wanted Garrus and never got him, so he played all three games alone without romance, and to go back to this and still be left high and dry just makes it impossible for me. MAN I wish I could have been as interested in Kaidan as you are, at least he'd have someone! Ahhhh *rolls off planet forever*

I loved the dlc too, I romanced Garrus and there were a ton of rewarding scenes and dialogue for that LI option, as well as for all the other characters in general. It was a hilarious and sentimental send off for the characters. I'm sure going to miss them all. The next Mass Effect game won't be the same without them.

As for the glitch, I haven't encountered it, but I haven't really been able to replay any of the scenes it occurs in. Hopefully someone in Bioware gets the message and fixes the problem.

Well, for some things I found lacking (needed more to Kaidan's scenes tbh), I enjoyed it and the jokes. It was nice to come together with everyone that you have fought beside. As I had one character that romanced Thane and Kaidan, Thane's memorial was the most poignant scene. I enjoyed it and even the last messages he left for femshep.

And yeah, to someone who said it, the love scenes at the apartment were too short and tame. I would have loved to see more interaction with Kaidan at the party, like you get with Garrus, Wrex, and others. Still, the scene back at the Normandy with Kaidan helped make up a bit for that lack.
